Roxana de Rond

Illustration, cards and gifts

“There is nothing so delightful as drawing”, Van Gogh wrote.  Framed at the entrance to my studio, I quite agree.

This year I have continued working on 3D pictures of various sizes.  First, I draw and paint images in watercolour, then cut them out, reassemble and layer them to create a 3D effect.  One of my favourite is a series called Whippy and Flake.  These are drawings of people that go together and titled with foods that go together.  The people shown could be friends, partners, sisters, mates, etc.

Roxana Cheese and CrackersOthers in the series are Fish and Chips, Champagne and Strawberries, Tea and Toast and Cheese and Crackers.

I have a lovely studio but really use it to store work, finished and in progress. Mainly, I work at the dinning table, which has great lighting and is in the middle of everything going on.  I nearly always work with music playing, either the radio or from someone I have just heard about.

It is quite obvious from my work that I love trees.  Among my many leafy favourites are the trees on Jesus green, the Silver Birches at Anglesey Abbey and Chestnut trees anywhere.  Living in a city with so much green space offers suitable drawing inspiration of both people and nature.

While many of my pictures are set in Cambridge, a trip back to Paris in the spring reminded me of many great places and times spent there in the past.  Watch out for some Parisian influence at my Open Studios in July and at Cambridge Christmas.

As for my preference between Christmas cake and Christmas pudding… I do rather like Christmas cake but traditionally (and this is where my Americanism comes in) we finish off the Christmas meal with an extravagant version of Apple pie.
