Jonathan Deer

An early interest in jewellery came about from living in Colombia during my twenties and thirties and being surrounded by amazing pre-Colombian artefacts and getting to know talented local jewellery designers and artisans. Since returning to the UK my passion for working with silver, gold and semi precious and precious stones has flourished.

Through numerous commissions and interest in my work, I have now set up Jonathan Deer Jewellery to meet increasing demand and along the way I hope to be able to pass on the passion I have for this great art to others.

three ringsWhere possible, every aspect and part of the final piece of jewellery is handmade in my studio, including the lampworked glass and findings (clasps etc.). This way of working allows each piece to have a unique finish and form and provides a sense of complete personal involvement in the whole process from initial design to fabrication to finishing. So much in this world is mass-produced with little or no soul, and I aim to put a little bit of heart into everything I produce.

No jeweller ever finishes the process of development and learning new techniques, and this is what makes working with gold and silver a fascinating and rewarding experience. I am continually looking for new ways to work with the materials to hand and like to combine techniques such as reticulation, etching and forging, among others, into my work.

I am a member of Cambridge Open Studios, showcasing my work every July at my studio in Ely.
