A career break and an almost-grown family gave me the time to explore the craft of book binding, something I’d always been interested in. I started attending classes in 2006 and over the past 8 years I have continued to learn, work and develop my own style.

My work takes two main forms. I design and take commissions for a growing range of memory journals collectively called ‘Turas’ (gaelic for journey), which satisfies a passion for passing on family memories through photographs and writing. I also love taking traditional book binding techniques and adding a contemporary twist. This has extended into upcycling books I find in our many vintage and charity shops.

Edel Handy 1I am very excited about my new LongJohn and Handy notebooks which I will show at Cambridge Christmas 14 as well as my Turas collection. I am also building a unique collection of one-off specialist upcycled books for the event. These have to be seen to be understood and believed!

In the past year I have been able to combine my old life with my new one bringing my teaching skills to book binding and I now run classes in this engrossing craft at Brignell Bookbinders and other local venues. This is fast becoming my favourite aspect of work. Mixing books with people – what could be better... Right now, I am particularly looking forward to my new Summer School of Book Binding in June and August.

My work can be seen at Cambridge Contemporary Craft and on my website and I’m taking part in Cambridge Open Studios, Burwash Manor this year.
